A unique and impressive feature of the Cider House is the layers of beautiful Alpine Ash timber that have been carefully crafted to line the building. This adds to the immersive experience and feels like you are inside of an apple box!
This stunning wood has been reclaimed from trees affected by the Black Summer Bushfires and milled by local craftsman Joe Burgess.
Known for its durability and resistance to weathering, Alpine Ash is a hardwood native to the Snowy Mountains of NSW. It features a lovely grain and light color that enhances its appeal.
A great deal of care, dedication and skillful expertise went into the hand milling process. By carefully crafting each piece, Joe was able to preserve its unique characteristics while ensuring the highest quality, resulting in a striking and uplifting finish.
The Cider House stands as a prominent example of resilience and hope.
We pay tribute to the losses experienced from the 2019/2020 bushfires by salvaging the Alpine Ash timber. This serves as a reminder to us about what we have been through, however it also represents how there can be beauty and new life from tragedy.
This initiative was made possible thanks to jointly funded Australian and NSW government Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund which was established after the 2019/2020 bushfires that tore through the Snowy Valleys and notably the town of Batlow.
The grant program required matched funding and Dave Purcell, founder of The Apple Thief Cider, alongside his wife Mel and two children, Jack and Sam, have invested in the project and backed themselves to ensure the success of the business.
